    Arab and foreign nationals wishing to renew their residence permits who have applied for the renewal of their passports through their respective embassies may be granted a temporary residence permit pending the issuance of their new passports, provided that they meet the following conditions:
  • A valid annual, permanent or courtesy residence permit on the application dateThe bridge cannot be built after the permit has lapsed.
    A valid annual, permanent, or courtesy residence permit on the date the application is submitted.
  • A receipt valid up to 3 months, allowing travel and free movementWhat the applicant receives while waiting.
    The applicant shall be issued a receipt valid for a maximum period of three months, allowing him/her to travel and move freely during this period. Applications shall be processed as follows:
  • Annual EMPLOYMENT residence: a FREE two-month permit, retained at the regional officefree · LBP 2 monthsCapped at three months from the previous permit's expiry.
    Approval shall be granted by the Directorate General of General Security to issue a free two-month temporary residence permit, which shall be retained at the regional office until the applicant obtains a new passport. The retention period shall not exceed three months from the expiry date of the previous residence permit.
  • Annual, permanent or courtesy WITHOUT employment: a permit on the previous validity, without late feesThe other branch, with the same three-month cap.
    Approval shall be granted by the Directorate General of General Security to issue a residence permit based on the validity of the previous residence permit, without late fees, upon submission of the required documents, provided that the retention period does not exceed three months from the expiry date of the previous residence permit.
  • The residence permit is issued on the NEW passportStated by the authority in its own sentence.
    The residence permit shall be issued on the new passport.
  • If the new passport has 6–12 months’ validity, a one-year permit is granted after paying the feesA band, not a threshold, and the fee is not waived here.
    If the new passport is valid for more than six months but less than one year, a one-year residence permit shall be granted after payment of the applicable fees.
  • An annual employment permit on the new passport follows the PREVIOUS permit’s validityThe bridge does not extend the entitlement.
    When applying for an annual employment residence permit using the new passport, the residence permit shall be granted based on the validity of the previous annual residence permit, after submission of the required documents.

Documents you must provide

  • An expired passport, or one with less than 8 months’ validityThe eligibility threshold.
    An expired foreign passport or a passport valid for less than eight months.
  • An embassy receipt or postal notification, dated at least 15 days before the permit expiresThe dispatch must have been approved by General Security, and the fifteen-day lead is a hard date.
    A receipt issued by the relevant embassy or a postal notification confirming the dispatch of the new passport (provided that the dispatch was approved by the General Security). The date of the receipt or notification must be at least 15 days before the expiry of the annual, permanent, or courtesy residence permit.
